The Guenther House is a restaurant, museum and store located at 205 E. Guenther Street in the King William neighborhood of the Bexar County city of San Antonio in the U.S. state of Texas. Inc., the home was originally built as a private residence in 1859 by Pioneer Flour Mills founder Carl Hilmar Guenther.

Constructed between 1915 and 1918, the room reflects the miller’s trade, with plaster bundles of corn and wheat used as supports for the mantel and wall buffet. Charles “Chuck” Leatherbury began his career with 11 years in sales and operations management at Angelus Sanitary Can Machine Company, the financial source of the Henry L. Guenther Foundation. After earning an MBA from USC, he held senior management consulting positions at both Deloitte Consulting and PricewaterhouseCoopers.
He began construction of his vernacular native limestone home in the district at King William and Guenther streets. The stones were quarried in the area that now is Brackenridge Park, and wood used in the construction was East Texas pine. The original entrance to the house faced southward towards the mill. A 1915 expansion of the house, changed the entrance to the north side, fronting the San Antonio River. The original entrance now serves as a hallway between the museum and the River Mill Store part of the house.[3][11] The top floor of the house is known as the Roof Garden and once hosted dances. The south side of the house now has a patio and arbor for outdoor dining.

The restaurant encompasses the original kitchen, tea room, dining room and the outdoor arbor areas of the Guenther House. The Parlor’s casement windows are one-quarter-inch glazed beveled glass. Window coverings, similar to those shown in a 1902 photograph, are of “Rosini” lace imported from Germany. The mirrors are arranged to give the illusion of a never-ending reflection.

Bass and her family have lived in the home since early 2023 after she was elected to the position. In 1848, a twenty-three-year-old apprentice millwright boarded Europe bound for America. His name was Carl Hilmar Guenther.Hilmar traveled through the Midwest before embarking down the Mississippi River to Louisiana and, ultimately, Texas. During this time, he was involved in a variety of work experiences including lumbering, farming and flour milling. Originally, the Parlor floors were constructed of virgin pine, a wood preferred for its hardness and pleasing pattern. During the home’s restoration, the flooring was replaced by virgin pine obtained from another structure built at the turn-of-the-century.
The dwelling’s northern façade still reflects its original 1859 composition, though much of its current detailing was added in 1915 and is reflective of the Arts and Crafts Movement popular during that period. Major features on this façade include curvilinear brackets supported by a gabled green tile canopy over the entrance and casement windows on the first and second levels installed prior to 1915. No more aparent than the commitment to excellence offered at the Guenther Hosue. In 1902 Erhard Guenther, Hilmar’s youngest son, became president of Pioneer Flour Mills. The changes that he made gave The Guenther House the look it has today.

Stones were quarried from an area near what is now the San Antonio Zoo for a single-story residence. The mortar joining these stones was made from rocks gathered downstream. Here, Hilmar and his wife, Henrietta Dorothea Pape, set up a home and raised seven children.

Carl Hilmar Guenther, the house’s original owner, first arrived in Texas from Germany in 1851. He was a trained cabinet maker, stone mason, and millwright, and constructed his first mill in San Antonio in 1859. The C.H. Guenther and Sons Flour Mill, now known as Pioneer Flour Mills, was located adjacent to his homestead along the San Antonio River. The dwelling was one of only three constructed in or before 1859 within the King William neighborhood and became one of eight constructed by Guenther family members in the area during the second half of the nineteenth century (Watson et al 1990). Guenther's home was one of the first built in the King William neighborhood.
The dwelling’s southern façade is also dominated by the 1915 addition and features an interior chimney, an elaborate art glass door with C.H. Guenther’s initials, and a row of basement-level casement windows with art glass transoms decorated with an ivy motif. The house faces northeast along the former north bank of the San Antonio River, and its setting is dominated by the presence of the adjacent Pioneer Flour Mills Complex (Watson et al 1990; Sanborn Fire Insurance Company var.). As originally constructed, the Guenther House was a raised, modified T-plan cottage constructed from locally available materials including limestone blocks quarried from an area near modern-day Brackenridge Park and mortar containing local sand reinforced with horse hair.
